The 'white cliffs of Dover' will always be close to English hearts. With its neighbours Hastings, Romney, Hythe and Sandwich, Dover itself is one of the original Cinque Ports (founded as a confederation way back in 1050) and has seen more than its share of military campaigns and wars. It's a slice of living history with a powerful dramatic past.
Dover is also geographically unique: it's the closest point in Kent to the continent of Europe and a vital cross-Channel link - thanks to the world's busiest ferry port.
