Review on 1861

From the outside, this sturdy brick building looks like a sedate country pub, but the food is pitched at a higher level than that. Built in 1861 - of course! - it still has many original features (think black beams and exposed brick walls), but the rustic interior has been given a subtle contemporary feel thanks to new owners Simon and Kate King.

Simon learned his craft at the Michelin-starred Waterside Inn and with Martin Blunois in Bristol before heading the kitchen at nearby LLansantffraed Court. He plunders the region for fresh produce and also takes advantage of pickings from his father-in-law's nursery (just to keep it in the family!).

Fixed-price menus might open with duck confit and pickled red cabbage or smoked salmon and horseradish risotto, while simply rendered main courses might take in the likes of medallions of pork loin with sage sauce, fillet of sea bass with red wine jus, and guinea fowl with garlic and parsley cream. Round it all of with strawberry crème brûlée with polenta biscuits or chocolate and walnut brownie with rum and raisin ice cream.
