Review on Walnut Tree Inn
For more than three decades the Walnut Tree was one of the UK's most iconic restaurants and a pioneer in the field of casual dining. Following the retirement of its heroic owners Franco and Ann Taruschio in 2000 it went through a tricky patch, closed briefly and has now re-opened with superstar Shaun Hill overseeing the kitchen.
The unshowy style that made the place famous is still intact, with a cosy stone-floored bar, unclothed tables, some artwork and greenery, plus food that deliberately keeps things simple. There are no twee flourishes or fancy gestures, just sharp modern dishes based emphatically on local sourcing and the seasons. Starters could be as earthy as salt beef with beetroot and potato salad or rabbit cromesquis with pickled quince and lemon zest, while bigger dishes usher in line-caught Gower sea bass with watercress beurre blanc or grilled sirloin with bone marrow, mushrooms and mash. As for dessert, think orange and almond cake or Pear William parfait.
Set lunch is a snip for around £20, and the wine list is a user-friendly selection of inviting stuff (including a few favourites from the Merchant House), with plenty of classy drinking by the glass and carafe. Those who fancy making a break of it can now take advantage of delightful accommodation at Ivy Cottage right next door to the restaurant.
