Review on Langdale Hotel & Country Club, Purdey's Restaurant
Comprising 350 acres of prime Lakeland countryside, the Langdale Estate is a natural woodland haven complete with streams and tarns, massive millstones and other reminders of the region's Victorian gunpowder works. There's also an impressive choice of accommodation, from timeshare properties and self-catering apartments to exclusive rooms in the Langdale Hotel itself.
Visitors are also offered ample choice when it comes to eating and drinking, with two restaurants, bars and Wainwright's Inn (named in honour of the doyen of Lakeland walks). Pride of place goes to Purdey's Restaurant, which has been designed in the style of an old mill with oak floors, local stone and water features; also take a look at the original cannon used to test gunpowder in the old days.
The kitchen makes good use of seasonal Lakeland produce for fixed-priced dinners with a modern accent. You might begin with confit pressed teal and apricot terrine with butternut squash purée or natural smoked haddock with a rarebit glaze, ahead of seared venison with braised curly kale, parsnip purée and a glazed fig tartlet or tranche of turbot with bean cassoulet and tarragon oil. There are also main courses to share (Barley Bridge lamb stuffed with spinach, apricot mousse and black pudding, for example), while desserts might feature brûlée rice pudding with homemade blueberry jam or poached pear with grapefruit jelly and cinnamon cream.
