Review on The Town House

The Town House sits in the shadow of Arundel's awesome castle, this demure Regency town house (formerly The Dukes of Arundel) has been turned into a delightful family-run hotel with a notable restaurant.

Much of the interior has been meticulously preserved, and the ground-floor dining room boasts a beautifully restored late-Renaissance ceiling which was supposedly 'taken' from a doge's palace in Florence. Its intricately carved walnut and gold panels are a joy to behold.

Lunches tend to be quite simple, but things move up a gear in the evening, when the fixed-price menu might offer modern dishes along the lines of pigeon breast on chorizo risotto, grilled skate wing with cauliflower purée, spinach and pine nut butter, or braised pork belly with caramelised cabbage and roasted turnips. To finish, there might be tarte Tatin with caramel ice cream or individual baked chocolate tart with cardamom crème anglaise.
