Review on The Maytime
Hidden away in the tiny Oxfordshire hamlet of Asthall, The Maytime offers a tranquil retreat away from the pace of modern life, deep in the heart of the Cotswolds. Newly refurbished and independently owned, behind the mellow stone exterior lies a traditional pub and stylish restaurant, boasting period features and low beamed ceilings, perfect for a quick drink or leisurely meal. During winter the restaurant has a cosy wood fire and in summer months you can take advantage of their beautiful garden for al fresco dining.
Their award winning Head Chef employs the finest seasonal and local ingredients for a menu that might kick off with a starter of ballotine and leg of rabbit, chorizo cassoulet and rendered pork belly before a main course of That Bali fish, pangasius, tiger prawn tails and red snapper marinated in balinese spices, steamed in banana leaves with saffron rice, stir fry pak choi and sambal, or for meat lovers there's saddle of venison, butternut squash, vichy carrot, shiitake mushroom, pinot noir and juniper berry sauce. Desserts offer an enticing mix of flavours with a Balinese black rice pudding, coconut milk pandana leaf and palm sugar or a tumbled cheese cake, kiwi, papaya, mango and redcurrant syrup.
Should you wish to extend your stay and explore the area, The Maytime has six smart bedrooms available.
