Review on Sweet Olive at Chequers Inn
The Chequers Inn at Aston Tirrold began life in the fifteenth century, when it was modified from a collection of separate brick cottages. A great deal has changed since then, and time-travellers from the past wouldn't recognise the place if they walked into the bar: in fact they might even think they had touched down in the wrong country.
Everything about The Chequers now proclaims 'France', from the empty wine boxes emblazoned with the names of renowned châteaux and vineyards to the litany of dishes on the blackboard menu. It should come as no surprise that current incumbents, Olivier Bouet and Stephane Brun, hail from across The English Channel.
They have stamped their mark on the food served in the casual Sweet Olive restaurant, and their ever-changing repertoire offers full-blooded offerings like duck and hare terrine, moules provençale, and escalopes of venison with cabbage and cream sauce. Desserts bring it all back home, with reassuring old English favourites like Victoria plum fool or treacle sponge with custard.
