Review on River Cottage Canteen & Deli
River Cottage Canteen & Deli in the carpet town of Axminister was celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's first foray into restaurants. The venue is divided into three sections, the deli where you can buy a wide selection of fresh local produce, the cafe style dining area and the main restaurant. The tall room has a rustic décor with a stripped wood floor, mismatched chunky wooden tables and chairs with a relaxed casual ambience.
Head chef is Dan Richards and his menu showcases the very best seasonal ingredients, with a blackboard menu that changes daily depending on what nearby producers and fishermen deliver. Typically you might find on the menu Hugh's mutton murguez sausages, herb dressed spelt and mint yoghurt or Cornish mussels, cider, leeks, bacon and bread. When it comes to desserts, try canteen truffles, Somerset cider brandy and coffee or white wine poached dried apricots, vanilla yoghurt and crumble topping.
