Review on Western House Hotel, Jockey Club Restaurant
Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and built in 1920 beside Ayr racecourse (Scotland's premier venue devoted to the 'sport of kings'), this impressive looking hotel is a favourite with tourists, punters and golfers aiming for Royal Troon.
At its heart is the prestigious Jockey Club Restaurant, overlooking the lavish hotel gardens and suitably festooned with racing prints and memorabilia. The panelled interior has been given some airy modern flourishes, and the food has a modern edge - with a classical backbone that shows in the Cullen skink, côte de boeuf and apple tarte Tatin.
Alternatively, you might take a more contemporary route for terrine of confit duck with Puy lentils, fig and sherry vinaigrette, followed by fillet of lemon sole with crab and salmon mousseline. To finish, perhaps jam roly-poly or dark chocolate fondant with cherry compote and Amaretto ice cream.
