Review on Bella Cuba
Juan Carlos Jimenez and family have brought a taste of exotic Cuban cuisine to Dublin with this colourful, lively restaurant bedecked with native mementoes. The food is a fascinating amalgam of Spanish and South American influences, and the menu does its best to explain the intricacies of the cuisine.
Black bean soup is a traditional way to start, or you might prefer crispy plantain baskets filled with shrimps, crab or shredded beef. Tiny pastelitos (meat pastries dusted with sugar) are a must-try curiosity, likewise escabeche of swordfish with mango and chilli salsa. To follow, consider grilled pork chops with softito salsa, red snapper in coconut cream or the iconic 'drunken chicken rice' laced with beer.
Cuban rums, cigars and glamorous cocktails are part of the package and the wine list also includes a couple of representatives from the island. Jet-setters might like to know that there's a branch of Bella Cuba on Miami Beach!
