Review on Oregano Restaurant

It's well worth the drive northwards out of Belfast to find this house in the country, which makes a calm, relaxed setting for a meal away from the bustle of the city. As you might expect, Oregano has its own luxuriant herb garden, and the interior looks neat, smart and contemporary with its red and white walls, vibrant modern paintings and white upholstered chairs around bare tables.

The kitchen uses pickings from the garden for ambitious modern food along the lines of poached fillet of Glenarm organic salmon stuffed with herbs on a linguine of vegetables, basil pesto and crème fraîche or char-grilled haunch of Finnebrogue venison with thyme-roasted potatoes, slow-cooked red cabbage and juniper jus. You could start with seared scallops and beetroot purée and conclude with – perhaps – coffee and cardamom brûlée or tarte Tatin with toffee ice cream.

    Really very good actually.

Dermot and Catherine really deserve a Michelin Star. It's got to be the best fine dining outside of Belfast. I'm biased because I live quite close so I'm also very lucky. It's where I go if I want to impress a date x

    An unpleasant experience

We booked this restaurant for fathers day this year as we had heard good reports. There were 8 in the party including our 2 small children age 1 and 3. The staff, and one member in particular who seemed to be the manager for that day were very unfriendly, slow and unhelpful. On one occasion my one year old accidentally dropped car keys on the floor and the woman (manager) just picked them up and threw them back at us over the table. There was no conversation or pleasantries or smiling the entire time she served us. Another child in our party who was 8 years old took my little one outside to wait for the meal and the same member of staff told them that it wasn't a playground and to go back in - i had heard this as i was behind them going to the toilet. I could go on about the complete lack of any customer care or how to deal with families but I would run out of space.

I do not deny that the food was good but if you are thinking of bringing children please don't as you will be made to feel most unwelcome. We will never eat at this restaurant again
