Review on Gregans Castle Hotel
The original Gregans Castle – a curious sixteenth-century tower house – stands directly opposite this long-serving hotel, which has been run by the Haden family for more than 30 years. It nestles at the foot of Corkscrew Hill, deep in the eerie, rugged, almost lunar landscape of the Burren – haunt of botanists and explorers of ancient ruins.
You can admire the vistas and watch the sun going down over Galway Bay from the window tables in the dining room, where a classical harpist or pianist may entertain you during dinner. Organic Burren lamb and beef are the stars of the show – along with locally caught seafood – and the kitchen makes good use of organically grown vegetables from the neighbourhood.
Dinner might open with confit of duck in filo pastry with pecan nuts and herbs, before loin of lamb with courgette chutney and Madeira jus or roast cod 'en crepinette' with crab and smoked trout mousse. Local cheeses are first-rate and desserts might run to vanilla and almond pannacotta. The extensive wine list is notable for its fascinating selection of organic and biodynamic bottles. Simple lunches are served in the Corkscrew Bar.
