Review on Rolf's Country House
Over the last 25 years, the Haffner family has developed this old farmhouse, outbuildings and courtyard into a family-friendly holiday complex with self-catering cottages, de-luxe bedrooms, a restaurant and wine bar plus a kitchen shop. The whole place is delightfully situated at the top of Baltimore Hill, with glorious views over the harbour.
Light cafι-style lunches give way to more ambitious evening meals based on carefully sourced produce from the region. The wide-ranging menu takes in warm and cold salads (smoked chicken with chilli relish), pastas and mains ranging from marinated lamb cutlets on a bed of ratatouille to monkfish in white wine and chive sauce. Ice cream extravaganzas are alternatives to desserts such as chocolate and orange tart.
The wine bar doubles as a gallery with regularly-changing exhibitions by contemporary artists; outside is a bracing terrace with a splendid outlook over Roaringwater Bay and the Mizen Head Peninsula.
