Review on The Lord Crewe Hotel

Bamburgh's imposing Norman castle towers stands in the background behind this Grade II-listed hotel. The smartly refurbished bar and restaurant is where guests can enjoy classic dishes from home abroad with a contemporary twist using the finest local ingredients.

The menu might open with venison terrine and cranberry chilli dressing or garlic mushroom with garlic mayo dip, before oven-baked cod on roasted Mediterranean vegetables with lemon butter sauce, braised lamb shank on minted mash or roast duck breast with apricot compote. Round things off with traditional apple flan or Baileys and praline ice cream sundae.

    Horrendous service

We were part of a group of families...we arrived just before 3pm and queued at the bar to order food. Food order taken and we took a seat in a pleasant looking pub. We are then told that the kitchen was closed. It was 3 minutes past 3! There was no flexibility at all. What kind of business turns away 6 families worth of food and drink?
Throughout the time we stayed (for drinks), the teenage staff were dour and disengaged. We would have stayed for a couple more drinks and spent much more money had the staff managed to crack a smile, offer basic polite service, clear tables and pull their faces away from their mobile phones. Closing the kitchen is a poor decision (but one which sits with the chef) but the shocking service is attitudinal and totally unforgivable.
