Review on The Butcher & Grill
The Butcher & Grill is a godsend for lovers of red meat, this family-friendly set-up is making a big impact in Battersea. Go past the impressively stocked meat/deli counter and up some stairs to reach the rustic, brick-walled dining area, which is festooned with abstract images of Smithfield market in days gone by. A casual mood prevails.
Much of the meat comes direct from the owners' farm in Sussex; the rest is certified British (signboards spell out the provenance of each item). Choose your slice of expertly butchered animal protein, pick a free sauce and select an appropriate side order. If you don't fancy a ribeye steak, Barnsley chop or veal cutlet, go for one of the slow-cooked dishes (hot pot of lamb's offal or braised beef in Battersea Power Porter with horseradish and orange dumplings, for example).
To start, there might be a terrine, duck rillettes on sourdough bread or prawn cocktail, and you can sign off with peach Melba or apple crumble. The wine list is a short, sharp selection of 75 bins with plenty of robust drinking by the glass. A second branch is now open in Wimbledon Village, SW19.
