Review on The Commander

The Commander is a fascinating new venture - the conversion of a one-time Westbourne Grove watering hole into an unusual hybrid involving a transatlantic-style porter house and oyster bar plus a butcher, fishmonger, deli and florist.

Inside, it is classic open-plan brasserie with the addition of private rooms and even creche facilities at weekends (when family brunch deals are on offer). Oysters, langoustines, crabs and other crustacea are big sellers, along with extravagant plateaux de fruits de mer. Otherwise expect charcuterie boards, groovy Asian-inspired salads, burgers and a few oddities such as springbok carpaccio with smoked chilli jelly. Wines are also driven by a value-for-money philosophy: the actual bottle price is displayed, with increasing corkage for different bottles depending on their pedigree.
