Review on Blagdon Manor
Steve and Liz Morey's Grade II-listed manor house is set amid amid acres of rural Devon pastures and they have nurtured the place with real care. It runs along smoothly as a personable, unassuming country hotel with an unmistakable family atmosphere (complete with resident Labradors).
The homely feel extends to the warm, welcoming dining room with its flowers and candles in the fireplace. Steve's cooking depends on supplies of Devon produce from land and sea, and he makes particularly good use of seasonal game, naturally reared meat and fish from the day boats.
Multi-part 'tastings' are a favourite device (anything from North Devon duck and West Country lamb to blackcurrants), but the choice might also extend to colourful ideas like pan-fried sea bream with squid tempura, aubergine purée and ratatouille jus or breast of guinea fowl with black pudding, caramelised pears and Gewürztraminer juices. To finish, opt for - say - caramelised banana and caramel tart with toffee ice cream and peanut brittle. Some lighter dishes are also available at lunchtime. The wine list is an enterprising collection of carefully chosen bottles from global sources.
