Review on Beatrice Kennedy
Jim McCarthy's three-storey townhouse on Belfast's leafy south side was once a doctor's surgery and is named – apparently – after the GP's wife. Menus rather than prescriptions are the chosen reading matter in the dining room, which has a distinct retro '30s feel with ceiling fans whirring and big-band jazz playing in the background.
Fish and game are star turns, but the kitchen dispenses a wide range of modern dishes including scallops with foie gras and apple gratin, roast haddock with chorizo, mussels and tomato, and rib of beef with crispy potato and red wine butter. To finish, try sticky toffee pudding or chocolate fondue.
Vegetarians have a full menu to themselves and it's worth noting the 'express' early- evening deals (5.00 – 7.00pm Tue-Sun). The wine list is a regularly updated collection of good-value bottles from around the globe.
