Review on OX

In downtown Belfast, with a riverside setting overlooking the £300,000, 19.5 metres high Beacon of Hope metal sculpture by Andy Scott, OX opened its doors in March 2013 to glowing reviews from food critics, restaurant guides and foodies alike. The restaurant is a collaboration between two friends local lad, Stephen Toman who mans the stoves and Brittany-born, Alain Kerloc'h who manages front of house. Between them they have considerable experience in working in many of the world's greatest restaurants, Stephen sharpened his knives under Michelin-starred chefs such as Alain Passard and Joel Robouchon in Paris, whilst Alain, former restaurant manager and sommelier of Deanes has worked at critically acclaimed establishments such as two-starred Michelin Mirazur in France.

The restaurant with large glass plate windows to take in the views, has been designed by Oscar & Oscar along uncluttered lines, with exposed brick walls and simply laid tables and chairs, overlooked by the open kitchen where diners can watch all the action.

The menu is dedicated to seasonality resulting in imaginative and harmonious cuisine with a modern touch, created with the finest local ingredients. Open proceedings with artichoke, truffle custard, Ibérico ham and onion galette, followed by a main course of sea trout, crab, olive, samphire and pea or for meat lovers Mourne lamb, smoked aubergine, white bean and wild asparagus. There are enticing desserts to finish in the shape of white chocolate parfait, summer fruits and rosehip or lemon polenta cake, thyme custard, and coconut sorbet.

Stephen has picked up the Best Ulster Chef Food & Wine Magazine 2013 Award and the restaurant was named one of the top 50 UK restaurants in the 2014 Good Food Guide, as well as scooping a prestigious Michelin star in the 2016 edition of the Guide. Service led by Alain is focused, knowledgeable and friendly and a first-class wine list adds to the whole package.
