Review on Sakura
Oliver Tong and his family have been in Belfast for more than 30 years and their restaurant near the university has become a fixture of the local scene. Smartly dressed staff in embroidered red jackets patrol the bright, airy dining room, and the cooking is well above the provincial Chinese norm.
The best advice is to home in on the list of esoteric blackboard specials, ask for the 'Chinese menu' or simply leave things to Mr Tong, who is sure to come up with something authentic and unexpected. Sophisticated, full-on Cantonese food is the order of the day: gutsy hot pots (minced pork with aubergine and salted fish, for example), plates of exemplary roast and barbecued meats, shredded crab and scallops with sticky rice, and spot-on dim sum are high points.
