Review on Ken Lo's Memories of China
Ken Lo was one of the great ambassadors for Chinese food and culture, and did a huge amount to inform the British public about its subtleties and pleasures at Ken Lo's Memories of China. It's appropriate that this refined, long-serving restaurant still bears his name, even though ownership has changed several times in recent years; inside it looks swish, chic and exotically oriental with its Chinese calligraphy scrolls, lattice panels and screens.
Kam Po But has been running the kitchen for more than 20 years and he works to a lengthy, wide-ranging menu that cuts a familiar path through the heartland of Chinese regional cuisine. High points include fragrant braised aubergine, red oil poached dumplings, Szechuan spicy prawns with dry chilli and asparagus, and steamed breast of chicken in aromatic sauce. If the carte looks too daunting, try one of attractively priced set menus, which take you on a whistlestop tour of the country.
