Review on Alford Arms
Set in the unruffled Hertfordshire hamlet of Frithsden (a short drive from Berkhamsted), the Alford Arms is the original of a group of two enterprising Home Counties' gastro pubs, and it's a hostelry full of surprises. Enjoy a stroll in the woods around the historic Ashridge Estate (National Trust) or simply soak up the atmosphere in the rustic bar and dining room.
Local, free-range and organic produce are used to good effect and the seasonal menu divides up into 'small plates' (popular with the ladies who lunch) and 'main meals'. One dish that has stayed on the menu from day one is oak-smoked bacon on bubble 'n' squeak with a poached egg and hollandaise sauce.
Otherwise try scallop and plum tomato tarte Tatin, confit of duck on sweet potato purée with French-style peas or the Alford chicken Kiev served on a courgette and cottage cheese fritter. Chiltern lamb, prime ribeye steaks and calf's liver are also big sellers, the specials board changes every session and desserts might include maple syrup and liquorice pannacotta with pear crisps.
The wine list is a well-chosen slate with just about everything offered by the glass. Wine buffs should know that Frithsden Vineyard is just a stroll away from the pub.
This delightful pub, part of the critically acclaimed Salisbury collection, named Pub Group of the Year in the Good Pub Guide 2014, has also picked up the County Dining Pub of the Year gong for Hertfordshire, the tenth time the Alford has won the award since 2003.
