Review on Bengal Clipper
The Bengal Clipper at Shad Thames opened in 1994, the sister restaurant of the Bengal Trader in Spitalfield and it runs along similar lines, with the emphasis on eye-catching interior design and an Indian menu that aims for creativity. The high point is a series of striking, specially commissioned pictures inspired by India's culture and history, and there's also plenty of artistry in the kitchen.
Sophisticated regional cooking is the restaurant's hallmark and the results are very different from your average curry house. Here you might begin with Goan chingri baza (deep-fried giant prawns wrapped in spinach leaves) or a mushroom 'lollipop' (button mushrooms stuffed cheese, onions and spices). Among the main courses, look for murgh hyderabadi (marinated chicken stuffed with cashew nut paste), sathkari gosht (chunks of lamb in a wild lemon juice with naga chilli and lemon leaves), and the signature dish of Dover sole in a sauce of yoghurt, ginger and curry spices. Sunday lunch is a long-running buffet.
