Review on Hide Restaurant, Beverley Tickton Grange
Tickton Truffles (handmade chocolates) are the renowned speciality of the house at this family-run Georgian mansion set in four acres of grounds and rose gardens – and gift packs have spread the word across the globe.
Informal drinks in the library lounge make an inviting prelude to dinner in the Hide Restaurant. Ingredients from specialist Yorkshire producers form the backbone of the menu – everything from naturally reared Halsham ham and pork and lamb from Hutton Cranswick to Whitby crab and lobsters from Flamborough Head.
Starters might include Rosedale duck terrine with fine beans, apricots and lavender or Star Carr smoked rainbow trout with rocket salad, while main courses are in the modern British mould of peppered wild venison from the Wolds with bilberry sausage and chestnut mushrooms or poached halibut with Bridlington king scallop, leeks, tomato and sugar snap peas.
Desserts might feature anything from summer pudding with blueberry ice cream and Northallerton clotted cream to warm peach Pithivier. The grand finale is a marbled trolley loaded with over 30 British and Irish cheeses (including no fewer than 18 from Yorkshire itself). And don't forget those truffles with coffee!
