Review on Metro Bar and Grill

Set up in 1997, Metro was one of the front-runners for the city's bar/brasserie revolution. It stands deep in the city's commercial centre, and the bar heaves with hordes of suited types – especially when 'happy hour' comes around.

Beyond the bar is the main restaurant, a cool contemporary space with mirrors and abstract artwork on the walls and a spotlit glass roof. Menus follow the seasons and adhere to the classic brasserie format: the grill and rôtisserie holding centre stage for things like honey and soy spit roast chicken with wok-fried greens or char-grilled Dutch calf's liver with bubble 'n' squeak.

The remainder of the menu is made up of starters (chilli squid with mango salsa, for example), salads and pasta such as fettuccine carbonara, a clutch of seafood dishes and black board specials like fillets of sea bass with Thai noodle broth, followed by desserts ranging from coconut crème brûlée with cherry shortbread to butterscotch rice pudding with banana jam. The wine list is short, eclectic and fairly priced.

A second branch, which is run along identical lines, in now open at 680-684 Warwick Road, Solihull.
