Review on The Oriental Bar & Restaurant
Birmingham's first fully fledged Malaysian restaurant is housed in the city's fashionable Mailbox enclave, cheek-by-jowl with trendy bars and retail therapy destinations.
The cooking centres on South-East Asia, but there's also a strong showing of Thai and Chinese dishes, thanks to a team of chefs brought in from leading Malaysian hotels in Malaya, London's famed Hakkasan and Birmingham's Thai Edge.
At lunchtime (until 5 o'clock, actually) you can feast on dim sum including steamed chicken, pork and coriander dumplings, spring rolls and Peking-style ribs, as well as Thai fishcakes and Malay udan prawns, plus a broad selection of noodle specialities.
In the evening, you might begin with one of the 'sharing platters' or - say - Penang satay, crispy aromatic duck or soft-shell crabs with salt and chilli. Main courses cover everything from sweet-and-sour chicken with pomegranate to sambal sotong (squid with Malaysian sambal sauce and long beans).
