A spectacular example of florid Gothic architecture, Mar Hall was built in 1828 amid the expanses of the Earl of Mar Estate - famous for its connections with Robert the Bruce and Mary Queen of Scots. It also stands within easy reach of Glasgow and has the bonus of breathtaking views over the Kilpatrick hills.
With its Aveda spa, gym and impressive conference facilities, it's a prime venue for pleasure and business, with dining options topped by the Cristal Restaurant - a supremely formal and professionally run affair crowned by seven towering windows looking out onto the gardens.
The cooking is complex and modern with a strong oriental slant to many of the dishes on the dinner menu. 'New style sashimi' (tartare of turbot and oysters with Avruga caviar and wasabi sorbet) and scallops with monkfish and Asian greens en papillote could share the billing with chicken liver and foie gras parfait or rump of lamb with basil and cumin crushed potatoes; even the fillet of Angus beef comes with pickled ginger gravy. Desserts bring tweaked classics such as rose pannacotta or warm carrot cake with marmalade ice cream. Light lunches are available in the Grand Hall.
