Review on Kinloch House Hotel
Kinloch House is a gentrified showcase for Scottish hospitality in the grand manner. The ivy-clothed Victorian stone mansion – gloriously set in 25 acres overlooking the Lunan Burn – has impressive panelled rooms, waiting staff formally dressed in tartans, blazing log fires and fabulous antique furniture.
Scotland also steals the show in the kitchen and on the plate, thanks to a canny blend of indigenous ingredients and open-minded cuisine. Breast of pigeon with seared foie gras, mushrooms and Madeira sauce might start things off, before Gressingham duck with plum tarte Tatin, rösti, prune and apple sauce or fillet of halibut with herb risotto and aubergine caviar.
Rounding off the show are modern desserts like passion fruit soufflé with passion fruit sorbet or poached pear shortcake with caramel and lime sauce. The carefully annotated wine list puts its faith in high-class Bordeaux and Burgundies, but also gives vigorous New World challengers more than a passing glance.
