Review on Wright Brothers Oyster & Porter House
Ben Wright and Robin Hancock are actually brothers-in-law, but there's a great sense of family camaraderie about Wright Brothers Oyster & Porter House, an enterprising set-up on fashionably foodie Borough Market. The duo are best known as oyster merchants and suppliers to the great and good of the restaurant world, and their livewire Oyster and Porter House aims to take the 'ponciness' out of these elite bivalves.
It's a spit-and-sawdust kind of place with customers huddled around barrels outside or crammed shoulder-to-shoulder in the brick-walled bar. Shucking and guzzling in the business of the day and everyone has a great time: have your British oysters with pints of Guinness, or go for Champagne with French 'Pousses de Claire' and some sizzling hot chorizo.
The day's selection of oysters is written on the blackboard and it makes tantalising reading for aficionados and new converts alike. The piscine bonanza also runs to Helford wild mussels, razor clams, langoustines, pints of prawns, winkles and whelks, plus a smattering of cooked dishes too: grilled lobster, fish pie, steamed scallops with spicy soy sauce - even beef and Guinness pie. To round things off you could choose Cointreau and chocolate truffles or crème brûlée or there is some excellent cheeses from the market.
