Review on Casa Don Carlos
'Close your eyes and you could be on the Costa' just about sums up the irresistible charms of this cracking little tapas joint Casa Don Carlos, in Brighton's famous Lanes. But get there early for lunch or dinner if you are going on spec: of course, since it's open right through the day there are quiet times – if that's what you fancy.
The place is owned and run by a Spanish family: it's atmospheric and dimly lit, with cheery gingham cloths on the tables and – by all accounts – some of the most potent Sangria around.
Go with some friends and graze your way through a table load of little dishes: from a list of more than 50, you might be tempted by albondigas (meatballs in tomato sauce) or chorizo tortilla or patatas bravas or even alcachofas con jamón (artichoke with Serrano ham and wine). Wash it all down with some big beefy Rioja.
