Review on Casalingo

'Casalingo' roughly translates as 'home cooked', which gives an idea of the ethos behind Angelo Martinoli's charming restaurant in a buzzy part of Brighton close to the sea. He was born and raised near Lake Como and he loves his food - an enthusiasm that rubs off onto his 'absolutely outstanding' staff. Customers also adore the place and they are more than happy to sit elbow-to-elbow under the arches of the narrow dining room.

The kitchen deals in big-hearted traditional dishes, with pasta and risottos showing up strongly alongside grilled swordfish with crispy onion rings, fillet steak with Dolcelatte and port sauce, and specials such as salmon fishcakes on curly kale with dry Martini and saffron sauce. Desserts are classics such as tiramisù or torta al cioccolato, and the wine list mixes Italian favourites with familiar names from elsewhere.
