Review on Severnshed
Housed in an old boatshed built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, this venue really stands out from the crowd, with its original gabled roof and wrought-iron girders, expanses of contemporary stainless steel, marble and hand-crafted wooden tables. It also boasts a remarkable innovation Europe's only floating bar, which can rotate through 360 degrees or glide down the length of the building.
Severnshed also pulls the crowds with one of the most sought-after al-fresco terraces in the city: it's a gold-standard meeting place, with the bonus of glorious views over the narrowboats on the quayside towards St Mary Redcliffe church.
The food matches the cosmopolitan mood on the place and the kitchen has made its reputation with a strong commitment to all things organic. Global influences abound, so expect to see Asian duck and noodle salad alongside home made ham hock terrine or homespun fish and chips with Yorkshire 'caviar' (aka. mushy peas) next to char-grilled swordfish steak with chorizo or caponata-stuffed pork steak with sauerkraut.
Tapas and light dishes are served in the funky bar and it's worth checking out the 'Brunel' lunch and early-evening deals. The global theme spills over onto the wine list, which is naturally peppered with bottles from organic sources.
