Review on The Burnt Gate at Anslow
Parts of this evocatively named pub date back some three centuries, when it comprised a couple of cottages and a farmhouse opposite a forest and a tollgate: when all of this burnt down, the area became known as Burnt Gate.
These days, the place has been refurbished and extended, with a blaze of colour from hanging baskets and troughs outside, plus spacious interiors with light wood beams, open fires and a country feel - although Wi-Fi access is bang up to date.
Local produce looms large on the menu, and the repertoire is bolstered by seasonal game and seafood specials. Starters of devilled mushrooms on toasted focaccia or black pudding and apple salad might be followed by homemade pies, steaks, fish and chips or perhaps mushroom and butternut squash tagine. To finish, stay traditional with bread-and-butter pudding or try something a bit different - caramelised fresh fruits with brandied mascarpone, say. A tapas-style, deli menu is available in the bar throughout the day, and the kitchen also offers dedicated menus for coeliacs, vegans and others with special dietary needs.
