Review on Three Queens Hotel, Grill Room
Dating back to 1531, and reputedly named after the three English queens - Elizabeth, Mary and Anne - this town-centre hotel is proud of its history, but has moved with the times and now offers guests all manner of twenty-first century comforts and facilities from Broadband access and satellite TV to car-washing for mid-week visitors.
Hardwood panelling, tapestries and screens set a clubby mood in the intimate Grill Room, where customers can enjoy anything from char-grilled steaks with all the trimmings to more elaborate modern European cuisine. Kick off with pan-fried pigeon breast with 'refreshing' herb oil or seared cured salmon on warm bacon and leek salad. After that, move on to confit pork belly on a bed of poached rhubarb and sweet potato purée with red wine jus or pan-seared sea bass with a light smoked vegetable and saffron chowder. The choice of desserts could run to iced tiramisu with Baileys cream or prune and Armagnac crème brûlée with shortbread.
