Review on Alimentum
Latin scholars will know that 'alimentum' means 'food' - an apt epithet for this hot newcomer opposite Cambridge Leisure Park. Owner John Hudgell has gone for broke with stunning contemporary design and 'glamorous high-style' features, black leather booths and striking red chandeliers.
New chef Mark Poynton (ex-Midsummer House, Cambridge) is continuing where his predecessor left off. Ingredients are chosen with real care and commitment: Alimentum puts great store by 'ethically sourced' produce, and the kitchen uses only sustainable species of fish as well as naturally reared meat.
Menus follows the seasons, and dishes are infused with forthright flavours. Layered smoked salmon and chive terrine with pickled lemon or pressed pig's head terrine with crispy ears and port onions could open the show, while main courses sound equally irresistible: pan-fried gilthead bream with mussel tagliatelle and cauliflower or rack and breast of Denham Estate lamb with kohlrabi, for example.
Desserts end proceedings on a high note with, say, mille-feuille of chocolate and apple or chilled honeydew melon soup with Charentais melon sorbet. Also check out the sexy dessert cocktails. The well-spread wine list is split between the Old and New Worlds, and there's ample choice by the glass or carafe.
