A handy fixture of the Cambridge scene, just off the main drag, Backstreet Bistro wins friends with its relaxed, convivial mood and colourful eclectic cooking. The interior is buzzy and open-plan, with lots of intimate little areas and an enclosed outdoor seating area for alfresco meals.
The kitchen roams the world in search of culinary ideas, offering antipasti, mezze and Camembert fondue ahead of Thai crab cakes, Spanish-style chicken with chorizo and crispy potatoes, sizzling hoisin duck, and deep-fried Parmesan and risotto balls. There are also old favourites including moules marinière, steak frites and gourmet bangers and mash, plus desserts ranging from warm toffee and pecan tart to tiramisu.
A separate brunch menu runs every day (12.00 - 2.30pm) promising everything from eggs Benedict and croque monsieur to uitsmitjer (a traditional Dutch breakfast of pan-fried ham and eggs on toast with sliced tomatoes).
