Review on Café Mauresque
Exotic Middle Eastern and Moorish flavours have taken Canterbury by storm, thanks to the colourful and atmospheric Café Mauresque. The location is one of the city's medieval streets (there are tables on the pavement for sun-lovers and people-watchers), and inside, the Alhambra of Granada has influenced the decor very strongly, it's a riot of exotic Arabic lamps, ornate mirrors, Moorish tiles and Middle Eastern artefacts.
The kitchen delivers food which has a very strong Arabic influence obviously coming from those times when Spain was occupied by the Moors. A big slate of tapas is one of the stars (try butterbeans in sherry and tomato sauce, spinach tortillas, or squid and chorizo brochettes) and the rest of the menu covers mixed 'meze-style' assemblages, plus variations on paella, couscous and tagines (duck with honey-glazed squash, almonds, sultanas and cinnamon, for example). Look out for the pork belly served with potatoes and peppers, salad and the amazing membrillo and sherry sauce
Sandwiches and salads are served throughout the day, and you can also enjoy cakes and pastries with cappuccino or mint tea in the 'salon de thé' (noon to 5pm). Café Mauresque has a Mexican brother, Café des Amis in St Dunstan's Street, Canterbury.
