Review on Eight over Eight
Eight is a lucky number if you are Chinese, but 'eight over eight' translates as 'lucky forever' and it's a highly unusual and intriguing moniker for Will Ricker's fourth fusion restaurant in London. The setting is a converted theatre pub on King's Road, which has been given a hip makeover with silk ceiling lamps, stylish furniture and eye-catching sunflower-patterned dividers. Like Ricker's other restaurants, Eight over Eight is a honeypot for media celebs and star-watchers.
A helpful glossary on the back of the menu helps you through the obscure backwaters of the fusion jungle, and dishes are usefully grouped together in categories. Pick, choose and graze at your leisure.
Dim sum (which can also be eaten in the adjoining bar) include tuna tartare, crispy pork belly with black vinegar and so on; then work your way through sushi and sashimi, tempura (banana, peppers and sweet potato with orange ponzu), curries (duck with watermelon and cashews), BBQs and specials such as black cod with miso dressing or lobster with sweet ginger noodles. Close the show with mango brulée tart or chocolate pudding with green tea ice cream. Exciting, modish wines fit the bill.
