Review on The Restaurant at Ellenborough Park

The palatial Ellenborough Park is a magnificent 15th century manor house set high in the Cotswolds hills overlooking Cheltenham Racecourse. The hotel opened its doors in March 2011, after an extensive refurbishment saw the building restored to its former glory, whilst retaining much of its beautiful original features.

The Restaurant is located in what was once the parlour of this historic house and still retains the original stained glass Oriel windows and oak panelling, including the coat of arms above the spectacular open Tudor fireplace. It's a wonderful setting for Executive chef Andrew Birch who previously held the same role at Lainston House in Winchester.

Top-notch local ingredients are adeptly handled for a menu showcasing classic British dishes with a modern accent. Open proceedings with shredded Creedy Carver duck leg and foie gras, pickled girolles and orange dressing or pan-fried king scallops seasoned with curry spices, root vegetables, crab and coriander chowder. Main courses usher in roast Hereford Cross beef fillet, cep, thyme fondant potato, golden sprouting broccoli, confit onion and tarragon jus or from the sea choose pan-fried fillet of sea bass, caper and dill butter, baby spinach and white asparagus. As a finale, consider vanilla ice cream and blood orange baked Alaska, dark chocolate and mandarine Napoléon Brandy sauce or Valrhona Caramélia chocolate delic, parsnip milk and toasted hazelnut ice cream. To accompany the menu there's a majestic 500-bin wine list carefully garnered from boutique and family wineries from all corners of the world.

The Great Hall with its antique chandeliers, log fire and Minstrels Gallery is a perfect location for their sumptuous Afternoon Tea, or early evening cocktails and after dinner night caps. For informal dining there's the Brasserie decked out in a sporting theme featuring the famous Cresta Run.

Ellenborough Park has 62 luxurious bedrooms should you wish to extend your stay and explore the scenic Gloucestershire countryside.
