Review on The Pony & Trap
The Pony & Trap is a lovely 200 year old country gastro-pub in a stunning location, overlooking the Somerset hills within the beautiful Chew Valley. It is owned by young chef Josh Eggleton, a former Gordon Ramsay scholar whose mentor must be very proud of him, as he was awarded a Michelin star in the 2011 prestigious Guide. The enterprise is a real family affair, front of house is looked after by his sister Holly, brother Scott is behind the bar, his mother Gail is responsible for administration, while Dad, Chris helps out wherever needed.
Josh is committed to sourcing all of his organically produced ingredients as locally as possible, with the majority of meats, vegetables and fruits all coming from within just a few miles. The kitchen churns their own butter, make their own black pudding and even rear their own pigs for slaughter. Their seasonal menu could start with soused mackerel on toast with beetroot puree and smoked bacon or a flavoursome pressed pork, rabbit, prune and pistachio terrine served with green tomato chutney and toast. The most popular dish on the menu is char-grilled 8oz Newton St. Loe sirloin steak with slow roast tomatoes, roast mushrooms and homemade chunky chips or you might choose the pan seared fillet of sea bass sat on braised peas and baby gem with smoked bacon and cream. Desserts are equally inviting ideas like dark chocolate torte with hazelnuts and fresh raspberries or a lovely gooey sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream.
