Review on Cassons

Cassons at Tangmere is handily placed for Goodwood, Fontwell and also the Chichester Theatre, this charming restaurant is a valuable asset to the area, thanks to the care and dedication of owners Viv and 'Cass' Casson. Viv learned her culinary skills at 36 on the Quay, Emsworth, then ran a place in France before bringing it all back to Sussex. She has a keen eye for good local ingredients especially meat, seafood and game, and changes her menus every month.

Seared scallops are served on nests of leek fondue with a coral sauce, while pan-fried foie gras comes on toasted brioche surrounded by caramelised shallots and truffle sauce. Main courses are equally wide ranging, from oven-roast cod with chive beurre blanc and potato purée to boned saddle of autumn lamb with Mediterranean vegetables and roasted garlic sauce.

There are always several options for vegetarians, while Viv's desserts might range from treacle tart with ginger ice cream and lime sorbet to a 'fantasy' of bananas, caramel and praline.

Husband 'Cass' (his first name is a closely guarded secret!) is a genial host and a well-travelled wine buff – so expect plenty of good humour as well as an interesting list of unusual bottles from around the globe.
