Review on La Trompette
The people of Chiswick are fortunate to have La Trompette on their doorstep, although the restaurant is now much more than a local gem. Beyond its unassuming glass frontage and low awning is a cool, modern, ochre-toned interior that has an air of understated luxury with its wood-block floors and white linen tablecloths. The whole place has a subdued buzz and animated feel, thanks largely to the relaxed service and dazzling food.
There's little doubt that the kitchen is on song at the moment, with a Michelin star recently added to its clutch of accolades. The food has a strong southern French imprint, although influences from the Mediterranean are never far away - so roast fillet of beef with shallot purée, oxtail ragoût and persillade of snails might turn up alongside red mullet with brown shrimp risotto and grilled fennel.
Starters follow the seasons (Jerusalem artichoke and chestnut soup or steamed paupiette of sea bass and crab with mussels in January, for example), while desserts are exquisitely fashioned delights such as Griottine cherry and almond tart; the cheeseboard is a real winner, too. In all, this is assured, confident, unadorned food that puts good ingredients and strong flavours where they belong. Keenly-priced set menus offer an affordable taster for those on a tight budget.
La Trompette's eclectic, 600-bin wine list is a treasure trove of top-class bottles, with glorious stuff from the French regions and plenty of thrilling competition from Italy and Australia. Wines by the glass are many and varied, and there's an impressive selection of 'stickies' too.
