Review on Stovell's
Stovell's formerly the Cloche Hat is one of Surrey's longest serving fine dining restaurants, located on the outskirts of rural Chobham in a beautiful 16th century farmhouse. It was taken over in 2012 by husband and wife team Fernando and Kristy Stovell, who previously worked as joint head chefs of London's Cuckoo Club. Mexican born Fernando has worked at critically acclaimed restaurants such as Michelin starred The Capital and is also a regular guest chef on BBC's Saturday Kitchen and Market Kitchen. The interior has undergone a stylish refurbishment and now looks eminently chic with an understated elegance in keeping with the building.
Ingredients for the menu are carefully selected with a keen eye for locality and seasonality. The Stovell's not only go foraging in nearby Cobham Woods, but are working with a local school who grow produce bought by the restaurant. The dishes appearing on the contemporary European menu have certainly set the hearts of foodies racing. Choose a starter of caramelised hand-caught Loch Leven scallops, chorizo, ratte potatoes and walnut dressing, followed by a main course of crisp pressed Send Hill Farm suckling pig, prunes, sherry vinegar and cauliflower cream, or you could opt for the lamb mixed grill from the restaurant's custom made grill. To finish there are artfully displayed desserts such as warm dark chocolate fondant, Tudor rose ice cream and rosebay willowherb or William Pear confit, lightly spiced cream and pain d'epices.
Stovell's was crowned Readers restaurant of the year for the South East by Waitrose Good Food Guide 2015 and has also been awarded four prestigious Rosettes in the AA Restaurant Guide.
