Bibury is widely regarded as one of the most enchanting villages in England, and this ivy-clad country house (complete with enchanting gardens) is one of its showpieces.

The sumptuously elegant brasserie specialises in modern European cuisine, with the emphasis on good ingredients and stylish presentation. Begin with a tian of confit tomato and lightly spiced Feta cheese, garnished with curly endive salad, then move on to grilled lemon sole with sauce vierge or roasted fillet of Scottish beef, roasted parsnip purée and a port sauce. Desserts and cheeses are well worth exploring, and the global wine list is intelligently selected yet reasonably priced.

Alternatively, the Swan bar offers a slightly less formal option and is always open for lunch.
