Review on Mao Restaurant
The original member of the Mao mini-chain opened in 1997 just off Grafton Street and St Stephen's Green: its aim was to give the city a mainline shot of accessible fusion food combined with fashionable minimalist design. Like its younger siblings in Dun Laoghaire and Dundrum, this animated place hits the button with a kaleidoscopic assortment pan-Asian dishes drawn from all quarters of the Far East.
Menus are packed full of exciting flavours and esoteric ingredients: curries, salads and stir-fries figure prominently, and the repertoire blazes its way through roast pumpkin spring rolls, aromatic duck with mango and hokkien noodles, crispy whole sea bass served on steamed wong bok (Chinese cabbage) with ginger, onions and soy, or teriyaki salmon on mixed greens with sesame seeds. For afters, there might be anything from sticky date pudding to green tea mousse.
In addition to its Irish outlets, Mao also has restaurants in Glasgow and Cape Town, with more in the pipeline.
