Review on Shanahan's on the Green
Spread across two floors of a sumptuous Georgian building in the heart of the city, Shanahan's plies its trade as an 'American-style steakhouse and seafood restaurant' feeding off the best that Ireland has to offer. The setting is overtly grand, with original plasterwork, rare antiques and mirrors setting the tone.
'The menu is dedicated to the magnificence of the steak, a bovine wonder that was a delight beyond measure,' wrote one reviewer; indeed the certified Irish steaks are given exemplary treatment by cooking them on a special super-hot grill at 1600-1800ºF.
For those not hooked on beef, there are promising alternatives from land and sea including Galway oysters Rockefeller, crispy pork shank with melted cabbage and leeks, and Alaskan halibut with caper gremolata, plus inviting desserts ranging from cookies and cream cheesecake to baby banana soufflé with vanilla fudge ice cream. The extensive wine list has abundant choice from around the globe, and it's worth dipping into sections headed 'interesting reds', 'worldly whites' and the like.
Shanahan's fascinating bar (aka. 'The Oval Office') is filled with transatlantic historical treasures including the original JFK rocking chair and signed documents from US presidents with Irish connections.
