Review on Thorntonís at The Fitzwilliam Hotel
Having moved from its old site way out in Portobello Road to the gracious confines of the Fitzwilliam Hotel in 2003, Thornton's has consolidated its place as one of the top restaurants in Dublin. The cool first-floor dining room (designed by Sir Terence Conran) has glorious views over St Stephen's Green and is cleverly bedecked with Kevin Thornton's original food prints.
Artwork is a hobby, but high-class cuisine (without too many 'haute' pretensions) is Thornton's top priority. Local and organic ingredients form the backbone of his menus and there is much to enjoy and relish, whatever your preferences.
Fish lovers might home in on poached black sole with a Reggiano crust and parsley coulis or fillet of sea bass with broccoli, braised white onion and ginger sauce; others might prefer Wicklow venison with carrot 'cones' and Valrhona chocolate sauce or magret of duck with mushroom mousse, fondant potato and wild cranberry sauce. As a finale, consider blood orange soufflť with blood orange sorbet or tarte Tatin with butterscotch ice cream.
Thornton's also offers impressive tasting menus and great-value lunch deals, while its wine list majors in classy bottles from big-name regions. The restaurant recently underwent some major refurbishment, and it now boasts a sumptuous new 'canapť bar' where guests can enjoy nibbles and drinks Ė either as a pit-stop or as a prelude to a full meal.
