Review on Bistro Moderne by Mark Greenaway
Acclaimed chef Mark Greenaway has followed the success of his eponymous award winning restaurant on North Castle Street with the launch of Bistro Moderne in leafy Stockbridge, a ten minutes walk from Edinburgh city centre. A former old bank building with high ceilings, the interior exudes an unstated elegance decked out in muted colours, featuring dark wood panelling, polished brass and comfy tartan backed chairs, overlooked by all the action of the open kitchen.
Greenaway is well known for his high quality ingredients sourced from local producers and this is the basis for his modern take on French bistro fare. Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, with breakfast served on Fridays to Sundays, with regularly changing menus, a blackboard showing the specials of the day, as well as their unique dessert bar concept.
To start you might opt for the soft shell crab, fresh Scottish white crab with tartar sauce, followed by a main course of new season lamb chop, cauliflower cous cous, lamb belly and creamed spinach or monkfish 'bourguignion' style, carrot, pearl onions, pancetta, mushrooms and red wine sauce. To finish who could resist the tonka bean crème brûlée, cashew nut praline and stewed plums or bread and butter pudding, toffee, quince and vanilla.
The food is matched by a well chosen wine list together with an extensive range of inventive cocktails.
