Review on Contini Ristorante
Victor and Carina Contini started out as part of the family dynasty that put Valvona & Crolla top of the tree in Edinburgh, but decided to split and go their own way. The result is Contini (formerly known as Centotre) located in an imposing former bank that has been transformed into a bar/caffè/ takeaway/deli very much in the style of V&C.
'Imagine the best of New York and Italian eating all under a huge chandelier', noted one reviewer – and that just about sums up the Centotre experience. Expect fresh pasta, pizzas with myriad toppings from the huge oven, gorgeous salads, fascinating cheeses which arrive weekly from the owners' 'affinatori' in Lombardy, homemade gelati and more.
If you fancy something more substantial, try steamed mussels in a tomato, parsley, chilli and garlic broth served with a char-grilled pizza, Italian sausages with soft polenta and a cannellini bean stew, and pan-fried chicken breast with Amalfi lemon juice, chilli and thyme. Add to that breakfasts, Sunday lunch Italian-style, heart-pumping coffees and an Italian wine list of matchless pedigree and it's quite a package!
