Review on Hanam's

Jamal Ahmed and his family are proud cultural ambassadors who have brought a taste of authentic Kurdish cuisine to the streets of Edinburgh. The man himself is normally to be found overseeing the dining room, dressed in traditional garb – and may even be persuaded to do a bit of authentic dancing if the mood allows.

Top billing on the menu goes to qozy – a massive casserole-for-one of braised lamb, onions and gravy served with bread, rice and a side dish of bamya (okra with tomatoes and garlic) – but there's much more to explore. Starters such as homemade falafel, kulicha (crispy balls of syrupy bread dough with yoghurt dip) and bayengaan (slow-roast baby aubergines stuffed with rice) get things moving, before Kurdish and Iranian-style kebabs, tashreeb (vegetable stews) and sweets including shariah (spiral nests of honey-soaked filo pastry with crushed pistachios) or lokum (a variation on Turkish delight).

You are welcome to bring your own booze (no corkage), although Hanam's does stock non-alcoholic beers, wine and even Champagne.
Note: payment by cash or cheque only.
